Welcome readers! Your pouring love on my previous posts has kept me dazzled. Jamshedpur is the city of my birth. This city of steel is so vibrant in terms of their food and state of living, the people are very down-to-earth and humble that it never fails to surprise me with something new! Last I traveled here was back in March 2022 to explore the rich tradition and culture of the state. I have a very emotional connect to this place since the day I was born also marks the birthday of Jamsetji Nusserwaniji Tata - who was an Indian pioneer industrialist and the founder of Tata Group. He is known as the greatest philanthropist of the previous century and he is the one who established the city of Jamshedpur. On his born day, the city is decorated like a bride. Jamshedpur - the steel city of Jharkhand, where industrial prowess meets culinary delights. Jamshedpur offers a unique blend of traditional regional cuisine and diverse culinary influences. In this blog, we will take you on a gastronomic journey through the city's best food finds. From street food to fine dining, Jamshedpur has something to satisfy every palate.
So once you are in this incredible city, I bet you shouldn't miss out on these food items as they are the specialty of this place!
1. MILKSHAKE
Milkshake is something that shouldn't be missed here! I tried the most amazing milkshake from a street side vendor in Sonari and it was so good. We went there at 8 PM and to our surprise he was winding up his shop because he was out of stock! Can you believe that? His milkshakes are best-selling and he goes on to sell over 20,000 glasses a day. YES, 20,000 glasses each day. But we were lucky enough that he had a few glasses remaining - so we ordered 8 glasses for ourselves (we were 4 people) and trust me on this, it was very very good!
Also, you must not miss to have the Sitaphal milkshake at Bhatia Milkshake (since 1964).
2. PUCHKA
Do you love spicy food to the core and can never miss out on the chatpata food? If yes, then these puchkas are the answer to your cravings! Trust me when I say this, they are so good - chatpata and spicy that you will definitely not stop in one plate only! You will keep asking for more and more and more and maybe, a little more! Try this at Aditpur market, Gali Number 12.
3. PAPDI CHAAT
Another deal breaker here is Papdi chaat. As compared to Delhi's papdi chaat, this is a bit different. In Delhi, curd and other chutneys are added to the papdi chaat to enhance the taste. But the making in Jamshedpur is quite different. Flat puchkas / Papdis are loaded with spicy potato mix with finely chopped visible green chilly. Then Imly ki chutney, meethi chutney and hari chutney are added to it and topped with coriander. This may sound too boring but the blend of sour, sweet and chilly makes this a match made in heaven!
4. BIG BROTHER BURGER
Located in Kadma market, this cute little street side stall named as "Big Brother Burger" sells wide variety of burgers, momos and patties. These burgers and momos will tickle your taste buds because the chutneys they have.
5. MASALA DOSA @Vijay Dosa
Once in Jamshedpur, you can not miss the nicest of the street side masala dosas! The dosas were cooked to perfection, very crispy and covered with generous amount of spicy aloo filling (little roasted). It tasted the best with a bowl full of sambar and chutney. Reminded me of my last days in South India. This Vijay Dosa stall is located in the Gopal Maidan and is once-a-try for sure!
6. SATTU KACHORI, PAKORA & SINGHARA
We are talking about a state of India which was separated from Bihar a few years back and if we do not mention this special ingredient - SATTU - I think I will be doing injustice. Again, the powder of roasted chanas are mixed with mustard oil, finely chopped green chilly and different type of masalas, filled inside an aata kachori and deep fried till it turns golden brown! OMG, as I am writing this, my mouth is watering...oooh la la. Sattu singharas are a bengali word for Sattu samosa and they taste heaven with the green chutney!
7. MIX VEG CHOP
I had heard a lot about aalo chop or aalo Bonda but as soon as I arrived in Aditpur's very famous Gopala sweets and hunted their menu for the best, I found this on their menu which read "MIX VEG CHOP" with or without chole and other accompaniments. I immediately knew what to order here! Hence, I ordered this Mix Veg Chop which came with chole ki sabzi on top and it was very well garnished with finely chopped beetroots, onions, radish and namkeen. A little chutney was also added to add to the flavours and it tasted heaven!
